How to Archive and Unarchive a Chat in Telegram

Short answer: to archive a Telegram conversation, use Archive from that chat's swipe or context action. To restore it, open Archived Chats and use Unarchive on the same conversation. Archiving does not erase messages, leave a group, unsubscribe from a channel, or block anyone—it only removes the chat from the main list.

Telegram introduced the feature as a separate Archived Chats folder. Its official archive announcement explains that a hidden Archive can be revealed by pulling the chat list down and that muted chats normally remain archived after ordinary messages. One exception matters in groups: a direct reply or mention can still create a notification and return the chat to the main list.

Button names can vary slightly with the operating system, app language, and Telegram release. The steps below use only the stable Archive, Archived Chats, and Unarchive actions rather than assuming an exact settings path.

Archive or unarchive on Android

Archive one chat

  1. Open Telegram's main chat list.
  2. Press and hold the private chat, group, channel, or bot conversation.
  3. Tap the Archive action in the selection toolbar.

A left swipe may also archive the chat if Archive is assigned to that gesture. Android lets users customize chat-list swipe actions, so the long-press method is safer when a swipe mutes, pins, marks as read, or changes tabs instead.

There is one confirmed Android-specific difference: when Chat Folders are enabled, horizontal swipes can be used to move between folder tabs. Telegram's official Chat Folders announcement therefore recommends long-pressing a chat and using the bulk-action toolbar when swiping does not archive it. You may select several chats before tapping Archive.

Unarchive on Android

  1. Return to the top of the main chat list.
  2. Open Archived Chats. If it is hidden, pull the list down first.
  3. Press and hold the chat you want to restore.
  4. Tap the Unarchive action.

If your configured swipe gesture shows Unarchive inside the Archive, that works too. The conversation returns to the regular chat list; no message history is recreated because it was never deleted.

Archive or unarchive on iPhone and iPad

Archive a chat on iOS

  1. Find the conversation in the chat list.
  2. Swipe left on it.
  3. Tap Archive if the action is not applied immediately.

Unarchive a chat on iOS

  1. Open Archived Chats at the top of the list. Pull down from the top if the row is hidden.
  2. Swipe left on the conversation.
  3. Choose Unarchive.

Telegram's official Archived Chats tip describes the same reversible gesture: open the Archive and swipe the chat left again to send it back to the main list. Read the action label before tapping—Delete is a separate command and is not required here.

Archive or unarchive in Telegram Desktop

On Telegram Desktop for Windows, macOS, or Linux:

  1. Right-click the chat in the conversation list.
  2. Choose Archive.
  3. To restore it, open Archived Chats, right-click the conversation, and choose Unarchive.

The native macOS app and Telegram Desktop can place Archived Chats differently depending on window width, folder sidebar, and release. Check the top of the chat list first, then the main app menu. Do not use Delete Chat to tidy the list. Also remember that global search can find an archived conversation, but opening a search result does not itself unarchive it.

How to find a hidden Archive

On a phone or tablet, scroll to the very top of the main chat list, then pull down and release. Archived Chats should slide into view. Telegram's official Hide Archived Chats tip documents this exact recovery gesture.

If it still does not appear:

  • make sure you are viewing the main chat list, not Search or an individual custom folder;
  • pull down from above the first visible chat, not from the middle of the list;
  • search for a conversation you know was archived to confirm it still exists;
  • update the official Telegram app if the interface is behaving unexpectedly;
  • on Desktop, check both the chat-list header and main menu.

An empty Archive may disappear because there is nothing to show. Archive any harmless test chat to recreate it, then unarchive the test after checking.

How to pin the Archive so it stays visible

First reveal Archived Chats by pulling down. On supported mobile layouts, swipe left on the Archived Chats row itself and choose the action that pins or keeps the Archive in the chat list. This is different from swiping a conversation inside the Archive. Telegram notes that the same Archive-row gesture is used to pin or hide it, so verify the displayed action before tapping.

You can also pin conversations inside Archived Chats. That controls their order within the Archive; it does not keep the Archive row visible and does not move those conversations back to the main list.

Desktop layouts may keep Archived Chats at the top or in the main menu instead of exposing the mobile pin gesture. Use the placement offered by your current Desktop build rather than looking for a phone-only swipe.

What happens when an archived chat gets a new message?

By default, an unmuted archived chat moves back to the main list after an incoming message produces a notification. This is intentional: Telegram treats the new activity as potentially important. A muted chat continues receiving every message and normally stays archived after ordinary activity. However, Telegram's official reply tip says that a direct reply in a group sends a mention notification even when the chat is muted; that notification can make the chat leave the Archive.

Telegram also documents Archive settings that can keep unmuted chats in the Archive after new messages. If your app exposes that option, enable the setting that makes unmuted chats always stay archived. The exact label and placement can vary between clients.

If a chat keeps returning unexpectedly:

  1. Check whether the chat is fully muted, not muted only until a time or date.
  2. Check whether a group message directly replied to you or mentioned you.
  3. Enable the available option to keep unmuted chats archived.
  4. Archive it again and test with a new message.

Muting is not blocking: the sender is not notified, delivery continues, and unread counters can still appear depending on your notification and badge settings. For a quieter setup, see our Telegram notification settings guide.

Archive vs delete, mute, and chat folders

Action What changes Messages remain? Best use
Archive Moves a chat out of the main list Yes Hide inactive or low-priority conversations
Unarchive Returns it to the main list Yes Make an archived chat visible again
Mute Stops or limits notifications Yes Keep a chat without interruptions
Delete chat/history Removes a conversation or messages according to the chosen delete option Not necessarily Permanently remove content, not organize it
Chat folder Shows selected chats in a custom tab/filter Yes Separate work, family, channels, and other categories

Archive is a single built-in holding area. Folders are reusable views: a chat can appear in a folder while still existing in All Chats, and deleting a folder does not archive its contents. Use our Telegram folders guide when you want several organized tabs rather than one hidden list.

Archiving also does not free meaningful device storage. If storage is your goal, use Telegram's cache controls instead; follow the safe steps in how to clear Telegram cache without deleting chats.

Troubleshooting quick fixes

Swiping changes folders instead of archiving

This is expected on Android when folder tabs use horizontal gestures. Long-press the chat and tap Archive in the selection toolbar.

The chat reappears after every message

Mute it permanently or enable the available Archive setting that keeps unmuted chats archived. A temporary mute expires, and direct replies or mentions can still create notifications in muted groups.

Archived Chats is missing

Return to the main chat list, go to the very top, and pull down. On Desktop, check the top area and the main menu. If the Archive is empty, archive a test chat.

There is no Unarchive action

Make sure you opened the actual Archived Chats list, not a similarly named custom folder. Select or right-click the conversation there and look for the reverse archive action. Update Telegram if the client is outdated.

I archived the wrong chat

Open Archived Chats immediately and unarchive it. The action is reversible and does not alter the conversation history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does archiving a Telegram chat delete it?

No. Archiving only moves the conversation out of the main chat list. Its messages and media remain in Telegram, and you can unarchive the chat at any time.

Why does an archived Telegram chat return to the main list?

By default, an unmuted archived chat returns when a new message generates a notification. Mute the chat or use the available Archive setting that keeps unmuted chats archived.

How do I find a hidden Telegram Archive?

On mobile, go to the top of the chat list and pull down until Archived Chats appears. On Desktop, check the top of the chat list and the app's main menu because placement varies by layout.

Do muted archived chats still receive messages?

Yes. Muting changes notifications, not delivery. Ordinary messages keep arriving while the chat normally stays archived, but a direct reply or mention in a group can still notify you and may return the chat to the main list.
