Telegram Login Code Not Received: What to Do

First, check Telegram on every phone, tablet, computer, or browser where you are already signed in. Telegram may deliver the login code in the verified Telegram service chat instead of by SMS. If it is not there, confirm the full international phone number, make sure the correct SIM or eSIM is active, follow the delivery method shown on screen, and avoid repeatedly requesting new codes.

A login code is a security credential. Never share it with support accounts, bots, websites, friends, or anyone calling you. Telegram's official FAQ says login codes for Telegram itself appear in the verified chat named “Telegram” and should not be shared with other services or apps.

If you created a Telegram passkey before losing SMS access, choose the passkey option on the official login screen. Telegram documents passkeys as an alternative to SMS codes that can use your device PIN or biometrics and continue working when SMS service is interrupted. This helps only when the passkey was configured in advance and is still available in your password manager; Telegram still recommends keeping the account registered to an active number you control.

Quick checklist

  1. Check the verified Telegram chat on all devices with an existing session.
  2. If you configured a passkey earlier, choose it on the official login screen.
  3. Confirm the country code and every digit of the phone number.
  4. Verify that the correct SIM or eSIM is active and can receive ordinary SMS or calls.
  5. Read the login screen: it tells you where the current code was sent and whether another method is offered.
  6. Use an up-to-date official Telegram app, especially on mobile.
  7. If you requested codes several times, stop and follow any wait message shown in the app.
  8. If Telegram asks for a password after the code, enter your separate Two-Step Verification password.

Do not uninstall Telegram or log out of your only working session while troubleshooting. That session may be the safest route back into the account.

1. Look for the code inside Telegram, not only in SMS

This is the most commonly missed step. Telegram's official login troubleshooting FAQ confirms that if you recently used Telegram on another device—or even another Telegram app on the same device—the service may send the code through Telegram instead of SMS.

Open every connected device and look for a message from Telegram, the verified service profile with a blue check. Do not confuse it with the Verification Codes chat used for third-party websites and services. A code for logging in to Telegram itself comes from the verified Telegram chat.

This behavior is confirmed. What is variable is the route chosen for a particular attempt: Telegram can select among available methods based on the account, client, device, and current conditions. You cannot safely force a specific route by using a bot or unofficial website.

2. Verify the number, country code, and SIM

Telegram's FAQ explicitly says to enter the mobile number in international format:

+(country code)(carrier or area code)(phone number)

Check the number before requesting anything again. Common mistakes include a wrong country, a missing digit, an old number still linked to the account, or selecting the wrong line on a dual-SIM phone.

Then test the phone line itself:

  • confirm the SIM or eSIM is enabled and registered on the mobile network;
  • ask someone to send you a normal SMS or call the number;
  • check whether your carrier blocks service because of balance, suspension, spam filtering, or a recently replaced SIM;
  • when abroad, confirm roaming is enabled for the relevant line and that the carrier supports incoming SMS there;
  • if you changed numbers, make sure you are trying the number currently connected to Telegram.

Carrier delivery and roaming rules vary by country and operator. These checks can identify a phone-service problem, but they do not guarantee that Telegram will offer SMS or a call for that login attempt.

If you still control an authorized account but need to move it to a new line, use Telegram's built-in process described in how to change your Telegram phone number. Do not create a fresh account and expect the old chats to move automatically.

3. Check internet access and automatic date and time

The app needs internet access to request and validate login. Switch between trusted Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reopen the login screen. Temporarily disable a broken VPN or proxy if Telegram cannot connect. Set the device's date, time, and time zone to automatic, then restart the app.

These are general device checks, not Telegram promises. They can fix a local connection problem, but cannot force SMS delivery or expose an unavailable login method.

4. Use the official app and follow the method on screen

Install or update Telegram from its official applications page, Google Play, or Apple's App Store. Telegram's developer documentation says that under some conditions only official mobile apps can receive an SMS/call login flow. This is why moving from an unofficial client or a desktop login to the official Android or iPhone app can matter.

Do not download “code receiver,” “recovery,” or modified Telegram apps. They cannot legitimately bypass login protection and may steal the number, code, or Two-Step Verification password.

Telegram chooses the delivery method automatically. Depending on what the official login screen offers, a code can be delivered through an existing Telegram session, SMS, or another supported method. SMS and calls are not guaranteed choices. Telegram's FAQ also states that a spoken phone-call code is available only for accounts with Two-Step Verification enabled. Even then, use it only if the app actually presents that option.

5. Stop repeated requests when Telegram limits attempts

Repeatedly tapping “resend,” changing clients, or entering guesses can make the situation worse. Telegram's official authorization documentation describes anti-abuse flood limits and a server-selected next delivery method. Public documentation does not provide one permanent wait time that applies to every user.

If the app displays “Too many attempts,” a countdown, or a retry time, stop and follow that exact on-screen instruction. Do not use a timer copied from a forum: limits can vary and Telegram can change them. Keep the same phone number and trusted device ready, and do not submit old codes after requesting a newer one.

6. Understand the separate Two-Step Verification password

Receiving the code may not complete login. When Two-Step Verification is enabled, Telegram requires a separate password after the login code. The official 2-Step Verification FAQ confirms that the two credentials are separate.

A missing code and a forgotten password are therefore different problems:

  • No code: check the offered delivery route, existing sessions, number, SIM, network, and attempt limit.
  • Code accepted, then password requested: use the Two-Step Verification password or the recovery option Telegram shows for the configured recovery email.

Do not keep guessing the password. Follow the recovery flow in the official app and protect the recovery mailbox. For preventive settings after access is restored, see the Telegram privacy and security guide.

7. If the phone or SIM is lost

If Telegram is still open on another device, do not log out. Keep that session, review Settings → Devices, and contact the mobile carrier to block the lost SIM and issue a replacement SIM or eSIM with the same number.

Once the replacement works, retry the official login flow. After regaining access, terminate the lost device, enable Two-Step Verification, and review account details. Our guide for a lost phone or compromised Telegram account explains the full security sequence.

If you have neither control of the number nor an existing authorized session, first check whether a passkey configured earlier is available on the official login screen. Without the number, an authorized session, or a working preconfigured passkey, do not trust anyone promising a bypass. The practical recovery route is to recover the number from the carrier; recovery is not guaranteed if the carrier cannot return it.

When to use official support

After these checks, use the official Telegram support form if login still fails. Include the exact error, country, carrier, platform, app version, and displayed delivery method—but never a code or password. Telegram publishes no guaranteed response time, so ignore paid “fast recovery” claims.

What not to do

Do not share a code, enter it on a third-party “recovery” site, pay for a bypass, keep resending after a limit, discard your only authorized session, assume a call must appear, or confuse the code with the Two-Step Verification password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Telegram not sending me an SMS code?

Telegram may send the login code to the verified Telegram chat on another signed-in device instead of SMS. The service also chooses the available delivery method automatically, so check the login screen and every device where your account is still open.

Can Telegram call me with a login code?

Sometimes, but a call is not guaranteed or available to every account. Telegram's FAQ says codes dictated by phone call are available only for accounts with Two-Step Verification enabled; use only the option shown in the official app.

Is the Two-Step Verification password the same as the login code?

No. The login code confirms access through an offered delivery method. If Two-Step Verification is enabled, Telegram then asks for the separate password you created. Never send either credential to another person.

What if I lost the phone or SIM linked to Telegram?

Keep any existing Telegram session open. If you configured a passkey earlier and the official app offers it, use that to sign in without SMS. Otherwise contact your carrier to replace the SIM or eSIM with the same number; there is no legitimate ownership-verification bypass.
