The safest ways to find a person on Telegram are their exact @username, a t.me/username link they shared, a phone number added with consent, or their profile inside a group you both belong to. Telegram is not an open people-search database: a display name may match many accounts, phone discovery depends on contact and privacy settings, and there is no official search by photo.

Find someone by Telegram username
A username is the public identifier after the @, not the bold display name shown in chats. Telegram's username FAQ says public usernames appear in Global Search and let people send messages without knowing a phone number.
- Ask for the exact username, including underscores and digits. Capitalization does not matter, but spelling does.
- Open the search field from Telegram's main chat list.
- Enter
@usernameor the username without@. - Look under global results, not only your existing chats.
- Open the profile before messaging. Compare the name, photo, bio, mutual groups, and any details the person confirmed elsewhere.
- Send a neutral first message, such as “Hi, is this Alex from the design meetup?” Do not include passwords, codes, documents, or money.
Open a t.me link or use a profile QR code
For a username like @example, the normal profile link is https://t.me/example. Open it in Telegram, then verify the profile before starting a conversation. The link is not proof of identity by itself.
Telegram also officially supports themed QR codes for users with a public username. The person can generate a QR for their own username in Settings, or share one from a profile's information page. Scanning that code opens the linked Telegram destination. Confirm the profile afterward just as you would with a normal link.
Do not confuse a profile QR with a login QR shown by Telegram Desktop or Web. A profile QR is for opening a profile. Never approve a login, share a one-time code, or scan a login QR at someone else's request.
Find someone by phone number or contacts
Use a phone number only when the person gave it to you or you otherwise have a legitimate reason to contact them. Telegram's Privacy Policy says it asks permission before syncing contacts and uses contact names and numbers to help show which contacts use Telegram.
The dependable mobile flow is:
- Save the number in your phone's address book with the full
+country code, or choose New Contact / Add Contact inside Telegram when that option is available. - Allow Telegram contact access if you want address-book matching. Without permission or contact sync, a newly saved phone contact may not appear.
- Open Contacts or start a new message and search for the saved name.
- If Telegram finds an account, open its profile and verify it before messaging or saving additional details.
- If no account appears, check the country code and digits, then ask the person for their username or t.me link.
Typing a phone number into Global Search is not a general reverse lookup. Even a correctly saved number may produce no visible account because the number is not registered, the account uses another number, contact sync is off, or the person's discovery settings do not allow you to find them that way.
Number visibility and number discovery are also different questions. Telegram's phone-number FAQ says you can message in private chats and groups without showing your number, and visibility can be changed under Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number. Someone who already knows and saved a number still knows it; hiding it in a profile cannot erase another person's address book.

Find a person through a shared group
Telegram's FAQ on who can contact you says users can find one another when they are members of the same group. You can tap the person's name on one of their messages or open the group information and member list, then inspect the profile.
This does not bypass privacy. A shared group may let you view a public name, photo, username, bio, and mutual-group context, but it does not automatically reveal a phone number. Read the group's rules before sending a direct message. In professional or community groups, asking in the group first can be more respectful than an unexpected private message. Add the right profile to contacts
Finding a profile and adding a contact are separate actions. After you verify the person, open their profile and choose Add to Contacts or the equivalent label if available. You can save a useful local name even when you found them by username.
Before adding a phone number, remember that contact syncing can upload the saved name and number to Telegram. Telegram says syncing can be stopped and synced contacts deleted under Settings → Privacy and Security → Data Settings. Do not add large lists of people without their knowledge, and never scrape group members into a contact database.
What Telegram cannot legitimately do
- Search by profile photo: there is no official reverse-image profile search.
- Bypass phone privacy: no legitimate setting, link, bot, or paid service can grant you access Telegram has withheld.
- Guarantee identity from a name or photo: public profile details can be copied by impostors.
- Reveal every account tied to a person: people may use another number, no username, or privacy restrictions.
- Provide a trustworthy “leak database”: lookup bots and third-party databases may use stolen, outdated, or fabricated data.
Avoid services promising an address, real name, location, relatives, or private number from a username. Besides violating privacy, they can collect your query, phone number, payment details, or Telegram session. Never provide a login code, two-step-verification password, QR login approval, or session file to “search” for someone.
If the person still does not appear
Check the exact username, international number, contact permission, and whether you are searching global results rather than only chats. Then switch methods: ask for a current t.me link, request a public-username QR in person, or contact them through a channel you already trust. No result is not evidence that the person is hiding something; it often means the identifier is wrong, old, private, or not registered.
The goal is to reach the correct person with their consent—not to defeat their privacy choices.
