The practical privacy setup is: Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number → set “Who can see my phone number?” to “Nobody”, then set “Who can find me by my number?” to “My Contacts”. These two controls do different jobs. The first hides the number in your profile; the second limits whether someone can connect a number they possess to your Telegram account.
This reduces unwanted discovery, but it does not create absolute anonymity. Telegram’s official phone-number FAQ notes an important exception: people who already know your number and have saved it in their address book will always see it. A username, public profile details, mutual groups and your messages can also reveal or correlate your identity.
Exact path on Android, iPhone and desktop
Use the current account-level path:
- Open Telegram.
- Open Settings. On Android, use the side menu or profile area; on iPhone, tap the Settings tab.
- Select Privacy and Security.
- Select Phone Number.
- Under Who can see my phone number?, choose Nobody.
- Under Who can find me by my number?, choose My Contacts.
- Review every Exception shown on the page before leaving.
Telegram Desktop uses the same core route: Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number. Labels may be translated or moved slightly in a client update, but Phone Number remains inside Privacy and Security.
If the discovery control is not visible, first select Nobody under number visibility. Telegram introduced the second control as a follow-up option for this configuration, as described in its official privacy-settings announcement.
“Who can see my phone number?” controls visibility
This setting answers: When a person opens my Telegram profile, is my phone number displayed to them?
The usual choices are:
- Everybody: anyone who can reach your profile may see the number. This offers the least privacy.
- My Contacts: only people you have added as contacts can normally see it.
- Nobody: the number is hidden from profile viewers, subject to Telegram’s existing-number rule and your exceptions.
For most privacy-conscious users, Nobody is the right baseline. It lets you talk in private chats and groups without deliberately publishing your number.
However, hiding is not the same as erasing. If someone already has your number and saved it in their address book, Telegram says they will still see it. The setting also cannot remove your number from screenshots, exported address books, old messages outside Telegram, data leaks or another person’s device.
“Who can find me by my number?” controls discoverability
This second setting answers a different question: Can a person who knows or guesses my number use it to match that number to my Telegram profile?
In current Telegram apps, the practical options are Everybody and My Contacts—not Nobody. Choose My Contacts. Telegram explains that this prevents random users who add your number to their contacts from matching your profile to it, while preserving contact discovery for people already in your contacts.
A useful way to remember the distinction:

Changing only visibility is incomplete. A hidden number may still be usable for account discovery if the second control remains broad.
Contacts and exceptions can change the result
My Contacts means your side of the relationship matters. It is not permission for every person who saved you. Telegram may sync names and phone numbers from your device after asking permission. Its Privacy Policy section on phone numbers and contacts explains that synced contacts are stored to identify contacts and display names.
Check these points:
- On the Phone Number page, inspect Always Allow / Always Share With and Never Allow / Never Share With exceptions. A person or an entire group in an exception can override the general rule.
- Remove outdated exceptions, especially large groups added long ago.
- If you no longer want contact syncing, check Settings → Privacy and Security → Data Settings in a mobile app. Stop syncing and use Delete Synced Contacts if appropriate.
- Also update the phone’s address book. If sync remains enabled, deleted Telegram contacts may be imported again.
After changing the settings, test with a trusted account that is not in your contacts. Do not use a stranger’s number or expose another person’s data for the test.
Use a username and t.me link instead of sharing the number
A Telegram username gives you a contact route that does not require disclosing your phone number. Set one in Settings → Edit Profile → Username, then share t.me/username. Telegram’s official username and t.me FAQ confirms that people can open a chat through this link without knowing your number, and replying does not reveal the number unless your privacy settings permit it.
There is a trade-off: a username is public. It can appear in global search, and people who do not know your number may message you. Choose a username that does not reuse a revealing handle from other platforms if correlation is a concern. You can remove it by saving an empty username, but existing chats remain.
Avoid sharing a t.me/+phone-number link when privacy is the goal. It contains the number itself and works only when your number-discovery settings permit it. Prefer t.me/username or a group/channel invite link.
What happens in groups and channels?
Joining a group, writing in a group or contacting someone you met there does not by itself reveal a phone number that your settings hide. The phone-number rule still applies. But other profile data may be visible: display name, username, profile photo, bio, mutual groups and the messages you post.
Public groups and channels are not anonymous spaces. Posts in public communities are accessible publicly, and discussion comments may lead to your personal profile. Channel subscribers do not automatically receive an owner’s phone number, but admins should check which identity they use when posting or commenting. If you need a public contact point, publish a channel username or business username—not a personal number.

Security: hiding the number is not account protection
Phone privacy reduces exposure; it does not stop account takeover. A criminal may target your SIM, trick you into sharing a login code, take an unlocked device or reuse an already-authorized session.
Apply these controls separately:
- Enable Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification and set a unique password plus a protected recovery email.
- Enable Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock so Telegram requires a local PIN or biometrics on the device.
- Review Settings → Devices and terminate unknown sessions.
- Protect your carrier account with a PIN where available, and never share Telegram login codes.

Use this final checklist:
- Who can see my phone number? → Nobody
- Who can find me by my number? → My Contacts
- No unintended Always Share / Always Allow exceptions
- Contact syncing and synced contacts reviewed
- A non-identifying username used for public contact, if needed
- Personal number omitted from bios, posts, screenshots and t.me links
- Two-Step Verification, Passcode Lock and trusted sessions checked
This setup meaningfully limits exposure and casual number-based lookup. It does not make a profile untraceable, erase copies of the number held by others or protect against every technical and social threat. Treat phone-number privacy as one layer in a broader account-security plan.
