To start a Telegram Secret Chat, open the person’s profile, open its options menu and choose Start Secret Chat on a supported client. It creates a separate, device-specific conversation with end-to-end encryption. An ordinary private Telegram chat is a cloud chat, not a Secret Chat. These distinctions come from the official FAQ.
Start on your phone
- Open Telegram on Android or iOS and open the intended person’s profile.
- Open the profile’s options menu and look for the Secret Chat action. Its translated wording and position can vary.
- Confirm the action and check that the new conversation is identified as a Secret Chat before sending anything sensitive.
- Wait for the other person to connect if the chat has not become ready.
Do not assume the ordinary conversation has been converted. If your client has no Secret Chat action, use a supported mobile client rather than treating the existing cloud chat as encrypted end to end. A Secret Chat started on a phone will not appear through cloud sync on your computer.

The FAQ documents encryption, forwarding and device limits; Telegram also documents auto-delete in ordinary chats. Automatic deletion alone does not identify a Secret Chat.
The privacy policy adds a useful nuance: encrypted media can pass through Telegram’s servers, but Telegram does not have the Secret Chat keys to decipher it. Avoid interpreting ‘not in the cloud’ as ‘no data ever passes through a server’.
Set a timer before sending
Open the Secret Chat’s timer control and choose a duration offered by your client. The FAQ places the clock in the input field on iOS and the top bar on Android; newer layouts may differ. The timer starts when the recipient displays the message. It affects messages sent after the timer was set, not older ones.
Screenshots and device access remain risks
Telegram explicitly says screenshot alerts are not foolproof. Someone can also photograph the screen with another device. A timer and a forwarding restriction cannot guarantee that the recipient keeps no copy. Share sensitive material only with someone you trust.
For an additional identity check, compare the chat’s encryption-key visualization with the other person through a trusted channel, ideally in person. The FAQ explains this check; it does not replace securing both devices.
Missing history or a missing chat
Check the original device and account first. Logging out loses Secret Chats on that device; logging back in does not download them from the cloud. Do not log out or reinstall as a casual troubleshooting step. If you need access across devices, use a cloud chat with a clear understanding that its encryption model is different.
