To send a disappearing photo or video in Telegram, open a private one-to-one chat on iPhone or Android, attach one image or clip, open it in the media editor, tap the View Once/self-destruct icon, choose View Once or a short timer, and send. View Once media is removed from the chat after the recipient opens it. Telegram officially supports visibility choices from one view to 30 seconds in private chats.
This is a per-item setting: it does not make the whole conversation disappear, and it is not the same as a Secret Chat, auto-delete, or a Story. The controls may move slightly between app releases, but the timer belongs to the media editor, not the chat settings menu.
Quick steps on Android
- Update Telegram from the official app store, then open a private chat with one person.
- Tap the paperclip and choose a photo or video. You can also take a new photo with the camera.
- Tap the selected item so it opens in Telegram's full media editor. Do not send it as a document/file.
- Tap the View Once/self-destruct control — normally shown as a timer or a circle containing 1.
- Choose View Once for a single opening, or select a short visibility period up to 30 seconds.
- Tap Send.
The recipient sees a protected media message rather than a normal preview. The one-view option is consumed when they open it; a timed item remains visible only for the selected interval after opening.
Quick steps on iPhone
- Open an individual chat in the current Telegram iOS app.
- Tap the attachment button, choose Photo or Video, and select one item.
- Open the item in the media editor if Telegram only shows it as selected.
- Tap the View Once/timer icon and choose View Once or the desired short duration.
- Tap the blue Send arrow.
Telegram's older help wording places the self-destruct clock in the input field on iOS and in the top bar on Android. The redesigned flow described in Telegram's View-Once Media announcement puts the choice in the media editor. If your layout differs, look for the circle-with-1 or timer after opening the image itself.
What about Telegram Desktop and Web?
Telegram's public instructions document the creation control in the mobile media editor and give platform-specific timer guidance for iOS and Android. They do not provide a stable, current Desktop or Web path for creating a View Once photo or video.
If Telegram Desktop or Web lets you receive the protected item but does not show a timer while attaching media, that is not a hidden setting. Use the official Android or iPhone app to create and send it. Avoid relying on unofficial clients for sensitive media: their handling and screenshot behavior may differ.
View Once versus a timed photo or video
The same editor offers two closely related choices:
- View Once: the photo or video is permanently removed from the chat after the recipient opens it once.
- Timed media: the recipient can view it for the selected period after opening, from a very short interval up to 30 seconds.
- Normal media: no one-time rule; it stays in chat history unless someone deletes it or a separate auto-delete timer applies.
Telegram says saving and taking screenshots through the normal interface will not work for View Once media. That reduces casual copying, but it should never be treated as digital rights management or a promise of secrecy.
Where disappearing media works

A private cloud chat does not become end-to-end encrypted merely because its media is View Once. For device-specific end-to-end encryption and timers across new messages, use a Telegram Secret Chat. Telegram's Secret Chat FAQ says its countdown starts when a message is displayed and that the timer only affects messages sent after it was enabled.
Privacy and screenshot limits
Telegram's View Once design blocks the ordinary save action and in-app screenshot flow. Secret Chats may also try to notify participants about screenshots. Still, Telegram's own FAQ warns that screenshot detection is not bulletproof on every system.
A recipient can potentially use another phone or camera, a modified client, screen-mirroring hardware, accessibility tools, or an operating-system workaround. They can also describe or manually copy what they saw. Therefore:
- send sensitive media only to someone you trust;
- remove visible addresses, IDs, payment details, faces, or location clues before sending;
- review your wider Telegram privacy settings;
- assume anything visible on another person's screen can be preserved somehow.
Disappearing media reduces persistence in the chat. It does not revoke the recipient's memory or physical access to their screen.
How this differs from auto-delete and Stories
Auto-delete is a chat-level retention rule. Telegram's official auto-delete guide explains that the countdown in cloud chats starts when messages are sent, not when they are read. It applies only to new messages after activation; in groups and channels, admins control the timer. Use it to keep chat history short, not to create a single-open attachment.
Stories are audience-based posts, not private chat media. According to Telegram's official Stories announcement, a Story can last 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours and may also be kept on a profile. Troubleshooting: the View Once icon is missing
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm the chat type. Open a direct one-to-one chat, not a group, channel, Saved Messages, or Story composer.
- Update Telegram. Old app builds may show an older timer layout or no View Once label.
- Open the media editor. Selecting a thumbnail is not always enough; tap the photo or video preview itself.
- Choose one item. If you selected an album, retry with a single photo or clip.
- Send as media, not as a file. Document mode does not use the photo/video editor.
- Use mobile. If the control is absent on Desktop or Web, finish the send on Android or iPhone.
- Check permissions. Allow Telegram to access the selected photo/video or camera in your phone's system settings.
If you already sent the item normally, delete it for both sides as soon as possible and resend it with the View Once indicator visible before pressing Send. If the recipient already opened a View Once item, it cannot be reopened; that is expected behavior, not a download failure.
