Telegram Stories brought ephemeral content to one of the world's most popular messaging apps. Rolled out in 2023 and continuously refined since, Telegram Stories let you share photos and videos that disappear after a set time โ with more privacy controls than any competing platform offers.
This guide covers everything: how to post, how to watch, how to control your audience, and how channels can use Stories to grow engagement.
What Are Telegram Stories?
Telegram Stories are short-lived photo or video posts that appear at the top of your contacts' chat lists for a set period before disappearing. They work similarly to Instagram or WhatsApp Stories in concept, but Telegram adds its own twist:
- Granular audience controls โ not just "everyone" or "close friends," but custom contact lists and block lists
- Flexible expiry times โ 6 hours, 24 hours, or 48 hours
- Stealth Mode โ watch stories without the poster knowing
- Channel Stories โ brands and public channels can post Stories to their subscriber feed
- No algorithm โ Stories appear in chronological order, newest first
Unlike Instagram Stories, Telegram does not push Stories through a recommendation engine. Your Stories reach exactly the people you choose, and no one else.
How to Post a Story on Telegram
Posting from the Stories Row
- Open Telegram and look at the Stories row at the very top of your chat list
- Tap your profile picture in that row (it shows a + icon if you have no active story)
- The Story composer opens โ choose a photo from your gallery, take a new photo, or record a video
- Edit, add text, and set your audience (see sections below)
- Tap Post Story
Posting from Your Profile
- Tap your name or profile picture at the top left of the app
- On your profile page, tap the camera / + icon next to your photo
- Follow the same composition steps
Video Stories
Video Stories can be up to 60 seconds long. You can record directly in the app or select a clip from your gallery. Telegram compresses video automatically, but for best quality, keep clips under 720p if you are uploading from a gallery.
Story Editing Tools
Before you post, you have a full set of creative tools:
Captions and Text
Tap the text tool (T) to add a caption or overlay text. You can:
- Choose from multiple font styles (classic, modern, typewriter, etc.)
- Change text color and add a background fill
- Reposition text anywhere on the frame by dragging
- Add multiple text layers
Stickers and Emoji
Tap the sticker icon to add:
- Static stickers from your sticker packs
- Animated stickers (WEBM format, they play in stories)
- Emoji in large format
- Reaction emoji that viewers can interact with
Links
Telegram Stories support clickable links โ a feature Instagram restricts to high-follower accounts. Any Telegram user can add a link to a story. Tap the link icon, enter the URL and a display label, and it appears as a tappable button on the story.
Location Tags
Add a location sticker to pin your story to a place. This is cosmetic โ it does not create a public location feed โ but it adds context for viewers.
Drawing and Highlights
Use the pen/brush tool to draw freehand on your story. Choose brush size and color. Combined with the eraser tool, you can create simple visual annotations.
Audience Controls
This is where Telegram Stories stand out from competitors. Every story you post gets a precise audience setting:
Audience Options
| Setting | Who sees the story |
|---|---|
| Everyone | All Telegram users (public) |
| My Contacts | People you have saved in your contacts |
| Close Friends | A curated list you define in settings |
| Selected Contacts | You pick exactly who can see it |
Block List
In addition to the positive audience settings, you can exclude specific people regardless of audience. Even if you post to "My Contacts," anyone on your block list will not see the story.
Setting a Default Audience
Go to Settings โ Privacy and Security โ Stories to set a default audience for all new stories. You can always change it per story at posting time, but the default saves a tap if your preference is consistent.
Close Friends List
To manage your Close Friends list:
- Go to Settings โ Privacy and Security โ Stories โ Close Friends
- Add contacts by name or search
- When you post a story to "Close Friends," only these people see it
Story Duration: 6h, 24h, and 48h
When posting, you choose how long your story is visible before it disappears:
- 6 hours โ ideal for time-sensitive announcements (flash sales, live events)
- 24 hours โ the default and most familiar option (matches Instagram Stories)
- 48 hours โ for content you want to stay visible longer, like tutorials or important updates
After the story expires, it moves to your Story Archive automatically. Nothing is permanently deleted unless you choose to delete it.
Story Archive
Every story you post is saved to your personal archive, even after it expires from public view.
Accessing Your Archive
- Go to your Profile
- Tap My Stories or look for the Archive section
- Browse all past stories by date
From the archive you can:
- Re-post a story (it starts fresh with a new timer)
- Save the story to your device gallery
- Delete it permanently
The archive is private โ only you can see it. Your contacts cannot browse your old stories unless you re-post them.
Stealth Mode: View Stories Anonymously
Stealth Mode is one of Telegram's most distinctive story features. It lets you watch other people's stories without your name appearing in their viewer list.
How Stealth Mode Works
- Tap the eye icon with a line through it (the Stealth Mode icon) in the Stories row, or access it from the story viewer controls
- Once enabled, stories you watch are not recorded as views for the poster
Free vs. Premium Differences
| Feature | Free Users | Telegram Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth Mode duration | Limited, short window | 5 minutes per activation |
| Activations | Restricted | Unlimited |
| Hiding past views | No | Yes (retroactively hides recent views) |
Premium users get full Stealth Mode โ 5 minutes of anonymous viewing per activation, with unlimited activations. Free users can use a restricted version with fewer protections. If anonymity matters to you, Premium is the practical choice here.
Viewing Stories
The Stories Row
At the top of your Telegram chat list is a horizontal Stories row showing stories from your contacts. Stories with unread content have a colored ring around the profile picture. Tap any profile picture to open that person's story.
Navigation While Watching
- Tap the right side of the screen to advance to the next story segment
- Tap the left side to go back
- Hold to pause the story
- Swipe down to close the story viewer
Reactions
While watching a story, you can react with an emoji by tapping the smiley face / reaction icon. This sends a quick reaction to the poster without opening a full reply thread.
Replying to a Story
Tap the reply bar at the bottom of the story to send a text or voice message reply. The reply goes to the poster as a direct message in your chat with them. It is private โ other viewers cannot see your reply.
Channel Stories
Telegram channels โ public groups run by a single admin or brand โ can also post Stories.
Why Channel Stories Matter
- Stories appear in the Stories row for subscribers, putting the channel at the top of the app rather than buried in the chat list
- They allow real-time updates without creating a permanent post in the channel feed
- They drive engagement between scheduled posts
- They can include links directing subscribers to articles, products, or other channels
Posting a Channel Story
Channel admins post channel stories the same way personal stories are posted โ but they choose the channel identity instead of their personal account:
- Tap the + icon in the Stories row
- Switch the posting account from your personal profile to the channel
- Compose and post as normal
Story Analytics for Channels
Channel stories include built-in analytics:
- Total views โ how many subscribers watched the story
- Viewer list (for smaller channels) โ see exactly who watched
- Reaction counts โ which emoji reactions were used and how many
To see analytics, tap the view count shown on the story while it is active, or check the archive after it expires.
Privacy Tips for Telegram Stories
Using stories thoughtfully keeps your privacy intact:
- Default to Contacts, not Everyone, unless you want public visibility. Public stories can appear in Telegram search results.
- Use the block list proactively. You do not need to change your main audience setting just to exclude one person.
- Close Friends is your best tool for sharing personal moments. Build the list deliberately โ it is easy to add people and easy to remove them.
- Stealth Mode for sensitive browsing โ if you are researching a competitor's channel or checking an ex-contact's updates, Stealth Mode keeps you invisible.
- Story Archive is only yours. Even if your story was public, the archive version is private. Old stories cannot be found by others once they expire.
- Link privacy: When you add a link to a story, the link destination can see Telegram referral traffic. If the URL contains personal data (like a personal affiliate code), be aware of who might see it.
Stories vs. Regular Posts: When to Use Each
| Use Case | Use Stories | Use Posts / Messages |
|---|---|---|
| Time-sensitive updates | Yes | No |
| Permanent announcements | No | Yes |
| Behind-the-scenes moments | Yes | Optional |
| Important channel news | No | Yes |
| Polls and quick engagement | Yes | Both work |
| Content you want archived publicly | No | Yes |
| Content visible only to close friends | Yes | No |
Conclusion
Telegram Stories combine the familiar ephemeral format popularized by Instagram with Telegram's signature privacy controls. The audience granularity, Stealth Mode, and channel integration make them a genuinely useful tool โ not just a feature copy.
Whether you use stories for personal updates, close friends sharing, or channel audience engagement, the controls are straightforward once you know where to find them.
